The Fool’s Reverie

An analog-horror RPG about a late-night talk show that nobody turns off. Started as a university project for media design, we now keep pushing it privately with the goal of eventually releasing it on itch.io.

  • RPG Maker MZ
  • Story & dialogue
  • Character design
  • Analog horror
  • Two-person team

Gameplay

About eight minutes from a running build.

The video only loads when you press play.

What it's about

A Fool sits in a talk-show armchair and hosts a broadcast that was never supposed to exist. Slowly guests join him who are clearly not there by accident, and the longer the episode runs, the less about the studio holds together.

Almost everything gets told through dialogue and through what isn't said between the lines. That's the exact bit I love working on the most.

What I did

  • Story, scene structure and every line of dialogue
  • Character design and the game's visual language
  • Implementation in RPG Maker MZ
  • Title art, logo and merch design

Developed together with a friend. We split the technical polish between us.

Status

  • Playable build exists
  • Still being worked on privately
  • itch.io release planned

From the game onto a shirt

A project only really counts when you can wear it.

T-shirt for The Fool's Reverie: the logo small on the front, on the back the Fool in a collage of sky and city

I designed a shirt for the game: the logo small on the front, a collage on the back made of the game's motifs. Sky at the top, red city at the bottom, and the Fool in free fall in between.

The idea was that from a distance it should look like a normal print and only on second glance you notice that something's off. Which is exactly the tone of the game.

Giving something a face people recognise. That's the part of my work I find hardest to explain and love doing most.
